'EUA se envolveram numa guerra civil no Afeganistão'

O sr. afirma que, após o 11/9, a guerra do Afeganistão era necessária, mas hoje ela se tornou uma escolha. Por quê?

 Em 2001, havia uma guerra por necessidade: os EUA tinham de remover o governo Taleban por causa do apoio que o grupo deu aos ataques e à Al-Qaeda. Era preciso evitar novos atentados e, por isso, a invasão foi um ato de autodefesa da parte dos EUA.

No entanto, hoje no Afeganistão há um governo aliado e, mesmo com o Taleban ganhando terreno, não acredito que militantes estejam prestes a controlar o país. Além disso, diferentemente da situação pós-11/9, hoje temos uma série de opções, tanto no campo militar quanto no diplomático, para lidar com as ameaças no Afeganistão. Assim, o que fazemos no país é uma questão de escolha e não de necessidade.


Houve algum divisor de águas nessa transição?

Eu diria que o divisor fundamental foi a queda do Taleban - portanto, entre o fim de 2001 e o começo de 2002. A novidade agora é a decisão de Obama de enviar mais 21 mil soldados ao país, mirando não apenas na Al-Qaeda, mas o Taleban. Trata-se de um novo marco.

Mr.. states that after the 9 / 11, the war in Afghanistan was necessary, but today it became a choice. Why?

  In 2001, there was a war of necessity: the U.S. had to remove the Taliban government because of the support that the group gave to the attacks and Al Qaeda. It was necessary to prevent further attacks, and so the invasion was an act of self-defense of the United States.

However, today in Afghanistan there is a government ally, and even with the Taliban gaining ground, do not believe that militants are about to control the country. Moreover, unlike the situation after 9 / 11, today we have a number of options in both the military and the diplomatic, to deal with the threats in Afghanistan. So, what we do in the country is a matter of choice and not necessity.


Was there a turning point in this transition?

I would say that the fundamental divide the fall of the Taliban - so between late 2001 and early 2002. The novelty now is Obama's decision to send 21,000 more troops to the country, targeting not just Al Qaeda but the Taliban. This is a new milestone.
